DePuy Hip Replacement Surgery

DePuy Orthopedics, the manufacturers of the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems, has recently announced that these two popular systems have been recalled due to a high failure rate. A recent study has reported that an estimated 12-13 percent of all patients treated with these systems will need to undergo a second or revision surgery within five years.

If you or someone you love have had a DePuy hip replacement surgery from 2005 to 2009 and are experiencing pain or instability then it is a good idea to seek legal representation to obtain the financial compensation you deserve. DePuy Hip Revision Surgery

A hip replacement or resurfacing surgery is meant to last around 20 years. However, a recent study done by the National Joint Registry of England, out of the 93,000 patients that have been treated with this system, one in eight will need a second or revision surgery within five years. This equates to 11,500 people that will need to go through the pain and suffering all over again.

Unfortunately orthopedic surgeons and doctors are just now noting the serious complications surrounding the DePuy hip replacement systems and the official DePuy hip recall only came in August 2010, five years after DePuy Orthopedics first became popular in the United States.

Depuy Hip Revision Warnings

There have been several complications surrounding the DePuy hip replacement systems, many of which will result in a second surgery. Some of the most common biggest complications include:

  • continuous pain, swelling and infection at the implant site
  • continuous problems walking and with psychical activity, even after a lengthy recovery time
  • damage to the nerves, tissues and muscles in the affected area
  • metal on metal complications, including metallosis, pseudo tumors and black tissue surrounding the implant area
  • metal sensitivity and increased metal ions in the blood stream due to the metal on metal systems

In most instances, the only way to correct these problems is to remove the system and redo the hip replacement surgery all over again using a different hip implant.

DePuy Hip Replacement Surgery

You have already undergone one surgery and most likely clearly remember the complications surrounding it. Most hip replacement surgeries require at least three months of recovery and several days of bed rest. If you need to undergo a second or revision surgery, you could be looking at:

  • several more months recovery and rehabilitation
  • a loss of income if you are still working and unable to
  • the need for someone to take care of you
  • additional specialty medical equipment
  • emotional suffering
  • psychical pain
