DePuy Hip Replacement Systems
The DePuy hip recall involves two different ASR hip replacement systems sold between 2005 and 2009:
- The DePuy ASR XL Acetabular
- The DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems
The DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System is a hip socket used in traditional hip replacements while the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System is common in partial hip replacement involving placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur.
DePuy Hip Side Effects
Because both hip replacement systems use metal on metal, there have been a number of serious complications involving metal ions in the body. This includes:
- Metallosis – metal staining on the soft tissue
- Black tissue
- Pseudo tumors around the implant location
- Elevated rate of cobalt and chromium in the blood stream
Side Effects DePuy Hip Systems
In addition to these serious side effects, DePuy hip replacement systems have also been known to cause:
- Pain, inflammation, swelling or infection to the implant area
- Problems walking and straining when doing physical activity
- Increased levels of metal ion in the blood
- Bone straining, necrosis
- Damage to the nerves, muscles and tissues around the implant area
- Clicking, clanking or loosening of the implant
DePuy Hip Failure Rate
In many instances, these painful side effects of DePuy hip replacements result in a need for a second or revision surgery. In fact, according to a recent study by the National Joint Registry of England, out of the 93,000 patients that have been treated with DePuy hip replacement systems, one in eight will need a second or revision surgery within five years. This equates to approximately 11,500 people and puts the failure rate at 12-13 percent. On top of another painful surgery, patients will need to undergo another extensive recovery time and more physical, emotional and financial suffering.
In addition, it is expected that the failure rate of these devices is going to increase substantially in the future.
