DePuy Hip Recall Warning
DePuy hip replacement services have been used across America from 2005 to 2010. It wasn’t until 2010 that a US recall was issued for two of DePuy Orthopedics most popular hip replacement systems, the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems due to the high failure rate and associated side effects of these metal on metal systems.
If you or someone you love have had a DePuy hip replacement surgery from 2005 to 2010 and are experiencing pain or instability then it is a good idea to seek legal representation to obtain the financial compensation you deserve. DePuy Hip Replacement Warnings
Since 2005 orthopedic surgeons and physicians have relied on the DePuy hip replacement systems across the United States and have used these systems on several thousands of trusting patients. Earlier this year DePuy Orthopedics announced they would stop manufacturing the DePuy ASR hip replacement and resurfacing systems due to declining sales. They failed to warn patients of the serious complications and complaints at this time even though it has been suggested that DePuy Orthopedics knew. Later on in the year DePuy Orthopedics issued a warning to doctors and surgeons about the early findings of complications and failure rates of the system. It wasn’t until August 2010 that the official recall came.
Since then there have been several lawsuits issued against DePuy Orthopedics for failure to warm patients and defective medical manufacturing. There have been well over 400 complaints of pain and suffering in the past two years with many more people expected to suffer.
DePuy Hip Recall Failure Rate
According to a recent study by the National Joint Registry of England, out of the 93,000 patients that have been treated with DePuy hip replacement system, one in eight will need a second or revision surgery within five years. A hip replacement is supposed to last well over 20 years. This puts the failure rate of DePuy hip replacement system at 12-13 percent, much higher than is acceptable.
In addition it is expected that the failure rate of the DePuy hip systems will increase substantially in the future.
DePuy Hip Recall Warning
Patients who have received a hip replacement system between the years of 2005 and 2010 are advised to speak to their orthopedic surgeon or the hospital where the hip replacement took place to determine whether a Depuy hip replacement was used. If this is the case, patients should be on the lookout for the following side effects and complications:
- component loosening or component misalignment or any clinking or clanking when you walk
- infection, swelling, pain or discomfort around the implant area
- damage to the nerve, tissue or muscle
- problems walking or with other physical movement
- metal sensitivity and increased metal ion levels in the blood. Your doctor will be able to test this for you
- the need for a second or revision surgery
The Depuy hip replacement system was meant to make it easier to walk and get on with your life; however, for many patients, this system has only made things much worse. You may not only be experiencing pain and suffering, but you might also need to undergo another surgery with extensive rehabilitation and recovery time and fees. Why should you suffer anymore than you already have due to the negligence of DePuy Orthopedics?
