DePuy Hip Recall Metallosis
Metallosis is a serious complication of metal on metal hip replacement surgery recently linked to two of DePuy Orthopedics hip replacement systems – the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems. Metallosis is one of the many complications arising from these systems and also one of the main reasons for the high failure rate and the recent US recall of DePuy hip replacement systems. Metallosis can lead to severe tissue damage around the hip joint requiring revision surgery. For this reason, it is extremely important for persons with these devices to undergo blood tests to determine if you have high concentrations of the metal.
If you have been treated with a DePuy hip replacement between the years of 2005 and 2010, then you could be suffering from the many side effects and complications of metallosis and additional metal on metal hip replacement symptoms. Be sure to speak to your physician as well as a DePuy hip recall attorney about your medical and legal rights. Contact our firm for a free consultation with an experienced attorney at1-800-774-0757.
Metallosis DePuy Hip Recall
Metallosis is caused by abrasion of metal components, typically after failure of interposed polyethylene-bearing surfaces such as the ones used in the DePuy hip replacement systems. A doctor will be able to test your blood to determine whether or not you are suffering from metallosis. You may experience sensitivity to metal and metal staining on the soft tissue surrounding the implant.
Patients suffering from metallosis also experienced an elevated rate of cobalt and chromium in the blood stream and well as pseudo tumors and black tissue around the implant area.
DePuy Hip Recall Pain
In addition to the metal on metal complications, DePuy hip replacement systems have also been linked to several other side effects and complications including pain, swelling, infection, dislocation of the implant, problems walking and damage to the nerves, tissues and muscles in the implant area.
In many instances, these painful side effects of DePuy hip replacements result in a need for a second or revision surgery. On top of another painful surgery, patients will need to undergo another extensive recovery time and more physical, emotional and financial suffering.
Metal on Metal Hip Recall
Both of the DePuy hip replacement systems that are being recalled are metal on metal systems. The DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System is a hip socket used in traditional hip replacements while the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System is common in partial hip replacement involving placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur.
Since the DePuy hip recall, several hundreds of patients have spoken up about the pain and complications they have experienced. According to a recent study, approximately 93,000 patients across America have been impacted by this recall with 12-13 percent of all patients needing a second or revision surgery within five years. This equates to 11,500 patients that will need a revision surgery within five years.
