Avandia is a one of the most popular drugs used to treat type II diabetes manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, a leading name in medication and medical products. From 1999 to 2007 GlaxoSmithKline made an annual profit of nearly $3 billion from this popular medication. However, in 2007, Avandia users were devastated to uncover the truth about this medication – that Avandia may significantly increase the risk of death due to cardiovascular problems.
If you or someone you love has taken Avandia before May 2007 and have suffered from a heart attack or any other complication during this period of time, then it is important that you seek legal representation to obtain the financial compensation you deserve. Pearson, Randall & Schumacher P.A. have taken on a wide variety of causes against corporations producing defective and harmful medical products or drugs including Avandia. Avandia, also known as rosiglitazone, was considered a safe alternative to the then-common diabetes control drugs. When it first came out in 1999, the results were encouraging and many doctors made the switch to prescribe their patients to Avandia. In addition to helping control type II diabetes, Avandia has also been linked to treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and malaria. GlaxoSmithKline has sold the drug either as a stand-alone treatment, or in concordance with Avandamet and Avandaryl.
In May 2007, however, the FDA issued a black box warning of the product after several studies suggested that Avandia has been found to cause more harm than good. It increases the risk of heart disease such as myocardial infarction, or heart attacks. Since this revelation, additional studies have been implemented to undercover how dangerous this drug really is. Furthermore, the American Diabetes Association has stopped promoting the medication and, although doctors are still able to prescribe Avandia, many choose not to.
