However, it was not until 2009 that the La Roche Group announced the side effects associated with Accutane, including increasing the risks of serious medical conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Accutane Recall Facts
Accutane is a type of oral istretinoin used for the treatment of severe acne. It was first developed as a chemotherapy medication for the treatment of brain cancer, pancreatic cancer, and more but since the 1980’s has been sold as a prescription acne medication. Accutane derives from vitamin A and, when it first hit the markets, was credited as being a miracle invention. Millions of patients were pleased with how quickly and effectively Accutane cleared up their skin. However, it wasn’t until several years later than the Accutane side effects. In 2009, Hoffman La Roche announced that he would be taking Accutane off the markets citing dwindling sales as the reason. However, since the Accutane side effects have been realized there have been more than 5,000 lawsuits related to Accutane and approximately 56 million dollars in damages have been paid out in settlements to prescribed users.
